’13 Reasons Why’ Promotes Two Key Characters to Series Regulars
Katherine Langford may not be returning for season three of 13 Reasons Why, but there are two characters you can expect to see a lot more of come the conversation-starting drama’s next chapter. Whether or not that’s a good thing is up to you. Timothy Granaderos who recurred as Montgomery “Monty” de la Cruz in seasons 1 and 2 and Brenda Strong who played Bryce’s mom Nora Walker in season 2 have both been promoted to series regulars for the highly anticipated third season.
Granaderos’ promotion should come as no surprise to viewers as his role on the series was astronomically expanded throughout season 2. While initially introduced as Bryce’s lackey, Monty quickly became an even worse character on his own over time. After a season of terrorizing various characters testifying in Hannah’s trial, he brought things to a devastating level when he sexually assaulted one of them in the bathroom. It was by far the hardest and most disturbing scene to watch of the season and that story definitely needs to be explored more.
While many had expected season 2 to focus on the allegations made against Bryce on Hannah’s tapes, it instead focused more on whether or not the school played a part in Hannah’s suicide. However, the season eventually touched on Bryce’s rape, but it was not given nearly as much attention as it should have, so hopefully, season three will allow the opportunity for justice to be served. His mom Nora stood by him for a majority of the season before eventually saying he was dead to her after learning about all of his misconduct.
Netflix renewed the series, which was initially based on Jay Asher’s novel of the same name, for season 3 back in June. Much like the first season finale left off with a mild cliffhanger to set up a second season, the second season finale did the same thing. There were quite a few seeds planted that hinted a third season was definitely a possibility including Monty’s vicious sexual assault, Justin’s heroin addiction (and his mom’s psycho boyfriend!), and of course that crazy final scene where Clay is left standing in the middle of the school parking lot with a gun.
Creator Brian Yorkey will return along with most of the cast including Dylan Minnette, Christian Navarro, Ross Butler, Alisha Boe, Brandon Flynn, Miles Heizer, Devin Druid, and Justin Prentice. The series is set to return in 2019.

Having studied Media & Writing at James Madison University, I always knew that I wanted to do some type of creative writing, but being able to write about zombies, Starks, and superheroes on a daily basis for Fan Fest is my actual dream. While I probably shouldn’t be as proud as I am to be so similar to Nick Miller, I do hope to one day write my own “Pepperwood Chronicles’.
