’13 Reasons Why’ Team Teases Multiple Narrators and a Time Jump for Season 2

The cast and crew behind Netflix’s hit drama 13 Reasons Why is gearing up and getting ready for the highly anticipated second season of the series.  While they are keeping any and all specific details relating to the upcoming season completely under wraps, the cast and executive producers have been dropping some hints about what may be coming up in the next season.

At the end of the first season, despite making it all the way through the tapes, the audience is kind of left with even more questions than when they started.  Ideally, the second season would pick right up from where the first left off in order to get some of those questions answered but, that doesn’t sound like it will be the case.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Dylan Minnette, who plays Clay in the series, talked about where he’d like to see his character heading in the upcoming second season.  His response reveals that we may be dealing with a bit of a time jump in the second season:

“Naturally, I’d love to see Clay escape his demons from season one. I’d like to see him in a healthier place. The show takes place a few months after season one. I’m curious to know how Clay has coped the last few months.  Did he find closure? Is he moving on? Part of me wonders if he’ll be able to escape his anxiety, but I doubt it because that would make for compelling storytelling if he still has anxiety.”

Did he just say, “the last few months?”  He certainly did.  It would appear that, season 2 of the series will not be picking up with Hannah’s parents wrapping up their lawsuit and with us immediately finding out the answers to some of those cliff hangers.  Hello?!  What about Alex!?  It may take some time in the series to find out those answers but rest assured, they will be addressed.

Another big question surrounding the second season is, who will be narrating if Hannah’s point of view of her story has basically been brought to a close?  It wouldn’t make sense to have her continue to narrate when her story is complete.  Executive producer Tom McCarthy told THR that there will probably be more than one narrator in the next installment.

'13 Reasons Why' Team Teases Multiple Narrators and a Time Jump for Season 2Showrunner Brian Yorkey basically confirmed that same theory by saying, “There are 12 kids who have another version of those events that we actually haven’t heard from yet.”

So, who could be the narrator or narrators for the second season?  Katherine Langford, who plays Hannah on the series, has some theories and suggestions.  Langford said:

“I want someone kind of obscure, like Skye.  Jessica or Alex are very interesting, I’d be interested to see where their stories go this season. I want to believe [Alex] is alive.”

Minnette was asked the same question and seemingly ruled out his character Clay as the potential narrator.  Minnette joked:

“I would say Clay, but you’re already spending so much time with Clay.  Why do you need him to narrate?”

What do you think about a potential jump in time for the second season of 13 Reasons Why?  Whose point of view would you like to see lead the series?  Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.
