‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ Live Musical Coming to NBC Spring 2018

Jesus Christ Superstar is set to be NBC’s next live musical and will air next Spring. The network has always aired their live musicals in December as holiday specials but Jesus Christ Superstar will air on Easter Sunday, April 1, 2018.

It is based on the 1971 Broadway rock opera about Jesus’ final week alive and will have creators Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice coming on as executive producers. They will also provide the music for the live airing. La La Land’s Marc Platt along with Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are also said to be involved in the project.

Casting is underway but nothing official as of yet. They are looking to cast authentic recording artists.

“As we continue to expand the profile of our live musicals, we are thrilled to be partnering with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to bring a new live staging of the iconic ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ to NBC. Casting has just begun, but we want to fill out this classic show with as many recording artists as possible to give proper voice to what is the original rock opera score.”

~ Robert Greenblatt, Chairman of NBC Entertainment

Jesus Christ Superstar follows other NBC live musicals including The Wiz, The Sound of Music, Peter Pan and Hairspray. Other live shows that are scheduled for the network’s line-up include a live adaptation of A Few Good Men and a live musical version of Bye Bye Birdie.

Jesus Christ Superstar will be produced by Universal Television, Marc Platt Productions, the Really Useful Group, and Storyline Entertainment and it set to premiere on Easter Sunday 2018.
