‘Game of Thrones’ Final Season Could Feature Movie-Length Episodes

Season 8 of Game of Thrones may only consist of 6 episodes however, it turns out there is a huge possibility that those final episodes could actually each be close to feature film length.  Earlier this month at the Game of Thrones fan convention Con of Thrones, sound designer Paula Fairfield said during a panel that the final season’s episodes could be as long as a mini movie.

We already know that the final two episodes of season 7 will be 71-minutes and 81-minutes in length so, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that the showrunners would want to continue the expanded episode times throughout the final season as well.  After all, there is still a lot of stories left to tell and, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have said while the upcoming season will present fans with a much faster pace of storytelling, they do not want to rush the final seasons of the series either.

Benioff said:

“For a long time we’ve been talking about the wars to come.  Well, that war is pretty much here. So it’s really about trying to find a way to make the storytelling work without feeling like we’re rushing it — you still want to give characters their due, and pretty much all the characters that are now left are all important characters. Even the ones who might have started out as relatively minor characters have become significant in their own right.”

We won’t the true lengths of the episodes until season 8 is officially completed, however, the thought of full movie length episodes is pretty exciting!  It would be an awesome way to end a truly epic series.  And remember, there is still more Game of Thrones on the way!  George R. R. Martin has confirmed 5 potential successor series which are currently in development.

Game of Thrones season 7 is less than a week away!  The new season debuts July 16th at 9 pm EST on HBO.
