Daniel Dae Kim in Talks to Replace Ed Skrein in ‘Hellboy’ Reboot

Last month, it was announced that Ed Skrein, who had been cast as Daimio in the upcoming Hellboy reboot, would be leaving the production amidst controversy and criticism of whitewashing.

Skrein’s character is portrayed as Asian-American in the comic books and his casting yielded major backlash from fans of the original story.  In a heartfelt social media post, Skrein announced his departure in hopes of opening the door for more diverse casting.

On Monday, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Daniel Dae Kim (Lost, Hawaii Five-0) is currently in talks to take over the role.  Kim and his co-star Grace Park recently left Hawaii Five-0 over a pay issue.  The actors claimed they were seeing pay equal to that of the series stars Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan.  When a deal was unable to be reached with CBS, Kim and Park left the series.

Kim issued a lengthy post to his fans on facebook after his departure was announced.  He said, “As an Asian-American actor, I know first-hand how difficult it is to find opportunities at all, let alone play a well developed, three-dimensional character like Chin Ho.  I will miss him sincerely. What made him even more special is that he was a representative of a place my family and I so dearly love. It has been nothing short of an honor to be able to showcase the beauty and people of Hawaii every week, and I couldn’t be prouder to call these islands home.”

The Hellboy reboot currently stars David Harbour as the title character, Milla Jovovich as Nimue the Blood Queen, Ian McShane as Professor Broom, Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan and Penelope Mitchel as Ganeida.  The film is scheduled to hit theaters in 2018.
