Rian Johnson Comments on Carrie Fisher’s “Incredibly Emotional” Scenes in ‘Last Jedi’
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is almost set to hit theaters, with multiple showings selling out the same day tickets went on sale. But with the excitement of the next installment comes a bittersweet feeling of knowing that Episode VII will be Carrie Fisher’s final time playing the iconic Leia Organa due to her tragic passing last December.
Recently, director Rian Johnson commented more on Fisher’s role in The Last Jedi, saying “Having these scenes in the film recontexualizes tragically with her not being here anymore. It’s incredibly emotional.” Speaking to USA Today, he continued, “For the next few months, seeing the fans… process the loss and celebrate her as Leia one last time, it’s going to be intense. I think it’s going to be really sad but really joyful, I hope. She really kicks [butt] as General Leia, and I’m happy for that.”
During his panel at New York Comic Con, Mark Hamill paid tribute to Carrie once again saying, “You’re going to really love her in [The Last Jedi]. I know they’re going to try and find a way to close her story in [episode] 9 that gives her the respect she deserves, because [Han Solo] was more prominent in 7, Luke’s a little more prominent in 8, and certainly Leia was meant to be more prominent in 9.”
“Worldwide, everyone feels that gap she left,” he added. “But we all have to hang in there. And if she’s out there somewhere, we have to give her the one-finger salute. Come on everybody, for Carrie.”
The Last Jedi hits theaters December 15th.
