Sonequa Martin-Green Talks Playing Two Incredibly Strong Female Roles

When Sasha first appeared on The Walking Dead, it was clear that she was a force to be reckoned with. She was strong, both mentally and physically, and capable. She didn’t play a damsel in distress role, instead she took charge and did what she had to, to help herself and her loved ones survive.

However, the deaths of those closest to her hurt her in a way she was unprepared for. Losing Bob and Tyrese made it hard for her to believe in a world where happiness or longevity existed. Instead, she believed that trying to ward off the apocalypse around them was nothing more than a feeble attempt to pretend that some semblance of reality still existed.

With time, she flourished in Alexandria and formed one of our favorite relationships on the series. Sasha and Abraham, while short lived, had an incredible bond.

Part of what made Sasha so incredible was the way she wasn’t defined by anyone herself, even in the deaths of the men she loved so much.

Sonequa mentioned at a panel today at Walker Stalker Convention Atlanta that her strength was truly more defined after those losses.

In order to be truly strong you have to connect.

This rang true even through her death when she sacrificed herself before she could be used as a pawn to hurt Rick and the people she loved so much.

In a conversation with Eugene before her death, she explained that dying was the only way that wasn’t possible.

One way or another, he’s going to use me to hurt my friends. Our friends. And there is nothing I can do about it except make sure I’m not alive to give him the chance. If he has me, he will hurt them. I have to die. It’s the only way. I know you won’t do anything to stop them, I know that. But please, Eugene… Don’t let them use me to hurt our people.

Her death was one of the most iconic on the series, and her character will remain one of the strongest characters in the series.

So it makes sense that her newest role is, once again, that of an incredibly strong and passionate woman. When it was announced that she’d be taking on the role of Michael Burnham on Star Trek; Discovery, it helped mend our broken hearts a little bit.

Now that we’ve seen her take on that role, it’s like she was born for it. She brings her all to the role and  Michael is another strong woman character that she gets to bring to life.

Sonequa mentioned that th strength she has as Michael Burnham comes from the same vulnerability where Sasha was strongest as well.

You have to be able to feel emotions, to make an impact on those around you and to allow them to make an impact on you as well. You must hit lows and reach indescribable highs for it all to matter.
