Melissa Joan Hart Finally Weighs in on the New Netflix ‘Sabrina’ Series

There’s a lot of excitement rolling around about the upcoming Netflix adaptation of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, based on the Archie Comics series The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. It’s already been picked up by Netflix for two seasons and they’ve cast the perfect actress to take on the spunky witch- Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka.

However, while a lot of people are looking forward to the new take on the series, fans had begun to wonder just what the original Sabrina Spellman thinks about it. Well, EW met up with Melissa Joan Hart to get the scoop, and while she may not be passing the broom just yet, she definitely sees their vision.

“Indifferent, really. People kept asking for it, and they were already doing Riverdale, so I guess it made sense. I think they’re doing it in a smart way — change it up, don’t make it the same. If you’re going to do the same show, it probably would fall on its face, but I think what they’re doing is probably the smartest way to reboot something.”

However, even though she holds her original series near and dear to her heart, she would definitely be open to being involved if things felt right.

“Never say never, but it would depend on the character they wrote,” Hart says. “I just don’t know where I would fit in. I would definitely take a look at the material if they sent it along.”

Melissa Joan Hart iconically starred as Sabrina Spellman on ABC for 163 episodes from 1996-2003. The series was a staple of TGIF alongside other classics such as Boy Meets World, Sister Sister, and Step By Step. Sabrina the Teenage Witch was definitely more of a family show, so it will be interesting to see how some of the fans of the original react to Netflix’s more angsty portrayal.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a spin-off of The CW’s cult hit Riverdale and follows Sabrina as she juggles both evil forces and trying to be your average half human – half witch. It will be a darker take on the story and tonally in the same vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist.  Riverdale executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will write and executive produce alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater with Lee Toland Krieger directing.
