’13 Reasons Why’ Renewed For Season 3

Good news 13 Reasons Why fans! Netflix has officially renewed the conversation-starting drama for a third season just a few weeks after the second season premiered on the streaming site. They announced the 13-episode season with a short video of a “3” spraypainted on a locker. Check it out below!

Much like the first season finale left off with a mild cliffhanger to set up a second season, the second season finale did the same thing. There were quite a few seeds planted that hinted a third season was definitely a possibility including Tyler’s sexual assault by Monty, Justin’s heroin addiction (and his mom’s crazy boyfriend!), and of course that crazy final scene where Clay is left standing in the middle of the school parking lot with a gun.

The renewal comes as no surprise for Netflix ratings-wise as 13 Reasons Why has consistently been one of the site’s most popular shows with season 2 drawing “an average minute audience of 2.6 million in the U.S. during the first three days after its debut,” according to Deadline. Season one actually holds the record for the most tweeted about Netflix show of 2017.

Although, despite its popularity,  the show has continued to face a load of controversy around its strong subject matter including bullying, suicide, drugs, gun violence, sexual assault, and drunk driving. Both seasons have been heavily scrutinized by mental health professionals who worry about the show’s influence on younger viewers. Netflix took some very cautious and preemptive measures heading into season 2 with ample trigger warnings, viewing guides, and resources for those tuning in. In truth though, the series has sparked important conversations and portrays the struggles of high school in a very real and honest way, so it’s no surprise that Netflix chose to continue the story.

Creator Brian Yorkey will return along with most of the cast, except for Katherine Langford who confirmed that she would not return to the series after season 2. The series is set to return in 2019.
