Ranking All Five ‘Jurassic Park’ Films

This month marked the 25th Anniversary of the first Jurassic Park film premiering in theaters. Additionally, the franchise’s newest film Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom opened nationwide last weekend and is currently dominating at the box office. The franchise has a total of five films, all of which captivated audiences in their own time, but we all know that some of these films were better than the others. Sure, we all have our own personal favorites in any film franchise. When it comes to the Jurassic Park franchise, here’s our Fan Fest News definitive rankings for each one of the five dino-filled films:

Ranking All Five 'Jurassic Park' Films

5 – Jurassic Park III

The fact that I’m having difficulties remembering what even happened in this film is part of the reason why it’s ranked the lowest. Starring Tea Leoni, William H. Macy, and Sam Neill reprising his role from the original film, Jurassic Park III is a clear low point in the franchise. My main gripe with this film? Unlikable characters that leave you pretty much rooting for the dinosaurs throughout the whole film. Couple that with a thin plot that has nothing to do with the overall “science versus nature” arc of the Jurassic franchise and we have a film worthy of the bottom of our ranking list.

4 – The Lost World: Jurassic Park

The Lost World gets a ranking just ahead of Jurassic Park III simply because of the incredible cast. Overall, the film was lacking, however, Jeff Goldblum, Julianne Moore, Peter Postlethwaite, Vince Vaughn, Richard Schiff and Richard Attenborough reprising his role from the original Jurassic Park helped elevate this film to another level. Besides, who doesn’t want to see dinosaurs take over San Diego?

3 – Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

The newest film in the franchise also happens to be one of my favorites. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom had a rough time from the start suffering lots of criticism early on. It’s a film trying to follow-up on a premise that’s already been done four times over before. How can the fifth film in franchise stay fresh? Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom achieves that with some pretty big scares, a somewhat ridiculous and yet totally interesting plot, likable characters, a stellar cast (Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jeff Goldblum) and some twists and turns that will tug at your heartstrings and surprise you at the same time. We’re talking about you, Blue! You’re our girl and we love you!

2 – Jurassic World

Jurassic World was our first return to the Jurassic universe after fourteen years. In addition to a captivating storyline furthering the message about messing with the natural order of things, Jurassic World gave us some seriously nostalgic moments as well. Tell me you didn’t feel some kind of way when those kids stumbled upon the original Jurassic Park jeeps and merchandise while trying to outrun the Indominus Rex! Chris Pratt rocked it in his first appearance as Owen Grady, raptor trainer extraordinaire and it’s like Bryce Dallas Howard was born to play the role of Claire Dearing. Jurassic World was a great reintroduction to the dino world.

1 – Jurassic Park

There’s no contest when it comes to what the number one film should be. The original Jurassic Park film was (and still is) an absolute masterpiece. From the stunning visual effects (which were absolutely brilliant for the film’s time, and still hold up today) to the cohesive and captivating story to the irreplaceable cast, to the beautiful film score, this movie has it all. It was our first look into a world with living, breathing dinosaurs, and to this day, remains one of the greatest films. Side note, it’s actually one of my personal top five favorite films of all time. No other film in the franchise, present or future, will ever compare to the original.
