‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel Series is Set to Film in Belfast in October

Though HBO’s Game of Thrones series will be coming to an end next year, there’s still plenty more story left to tell through the newly greenlit prequel series!

On Wednesday, news broke that the pilot for the upcoming prequel series is set to begin filming this year in October. The series will film in Belfast at the Paint Hall in Titanic Quarters, the same studio where the original series was filmed.

The prequel pilot will be written by Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, Kingsman) along with Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin. Goldman will also serve as showrunner as well as executive producer along with Martin.

Goldman’s prequel is one of five potential spinoff series (or, as Martin calls them “successor series”) which were in development. Though the story told by the prequel series will exist in the same universe as Game of Thrones, Martin has recently revealed via his blog that none of the Thrones characters (or actors) will appear in the new show. According to Deadline, the prequel series is described as chronicling, “the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”

In addition to the prequel series, the final season of Game of Thrones is also on deck for HBO. The eighth and final season will be the epic conclusion of the battle for the Irone Throne. The final season of the Game of Thrones series is expected to air sometime in 2019 though no formal premiere date has yet been announced.
