It looks Lifetime has a lot of faith in its upcoming drama thriller starring Gossip Girl alum Penn Badgley as the network just ordered a second season ahead of its series premiere. Adapted for television from the Caroline Kepnes novel of the same name, YOU follows Joe Goldberg (Badgley), a young man who works in a bookstore in New York City when he meets a woman named Beck (Once Upon a Time’s Elizabeth Lail) and relies on his savvy internet know-how (aka stalking abilities) to make her fall in love with him. The first season of the show will cover the entirety of Kepnes’ novel.

Kepnes had a follow-up book for YOU titled Hidden Bodies, and while it’s unknown yet if season 2 will follow that book’s plot entirely, Lifetime did tease that “Joe will head to Los Angeles and venture into even riskier, bolder territory as he faces the darkest parts of his past as he tries to make a future for himself and the woman he loves.”

While at the 2018 Summer Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills on Thursday, Badgley talked about what similarities Joe Goldberg has to his iconic Gossip Girl character Dan Humphrey who he played for over 120 episodes on The CW.

[row]”Certainly there are parallels, not the least of which is that I’m playing both of them. I’d say the first scene of the first episode, by every measure, Joe might appear to be Dan. Then he diverges.”[/row]

The series also stars Pretty Little Liars alum Shay Mitchell, Luca Padovan, Nicole Kang, and Kathryn Gallagher.  Arrowverse helmer Greg Berlanti will be co-showrunning the series with Sara Gamble. The pilot episode will be directed by Lee Toland Krieger.
