Chris Pratt’s ‘Cowboy Ninja Viking’ on Hold at Universal

Chris Pratt’s Cowboy Ninja Viking is taking a quick pit stop as Universal has announced that they’ve pulled the film from its June 2019 release date a month prior to beginning production, according to Collider The news comes as quite a surprise seeing as Quantico’s Priyanka Chopra had just joined the cast. Now, the graphic novel inspired film will be heading back into development where it will undergo any necessary changes with hopes of going back into production mid-September. Pratt is still expected to star, but Chopra’s future with the film will remain more up in the air should she have any scheduling conflicts.

Extending the timeline of the film shouldn’t be too much of a problem for the film, which has been on a long road to theaters as it is. Jurassic World star Chris Pratt signed onto the project nearly three years ago. As of now, Cowboy Ninja Viking will be directed by Michelle MacLaren who has directed various episodes of The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones and Westworld and will be written by Dan Mazeau and Ryan Engle. The script has already gone through two previous drafts with one written by The Hangover II’s Craig Mazin and the other by Zombieland’s Paul Wernick and Everett David Reese. Pratt will be producing the project with Michael De Luca, Mark Gordon and Entertainment 360.

Based on the graphic novel by A.j. Lieberman and Riley Rossmo, Cowboy Ninja Viking tells the story of Duncan (Pratt), a man with a multiple personality disorder who was turned into a “triplet” thanks to a secret government program, leading him to become part-Cowboy, part-Ninja, and part-Viking, which all culminate together to make him a badass assassin.

Chris Pratt is still dealing with some of the fallout of his Gaurdians of the Galaxy director James Gunn’s recent firing from the upcoming third film. He and his Gaurdians castmates recently banded together to write a statement asking him to be reinstated, but Disney hasn’t made any moves to reverse their decision.

As of now, Universal does not have a new release date for the film.
