Glen Powell Is Joining ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ After All

Glen Powell may not have been able to win the role of Goose’s son in the upcoming Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, but he certainly impressed Tom Cruise and the casting team as he will still be joining the project in a different role! In a touching message shared on his Instagram, Powell spoke of his fond relationship with the original Top Gun and just how important the film has been to him throughout his life and career.

[row]”This movie is one of the reasons I became an actor. It’s why I always go low after a high-five, always fall in love with my teachers, say things like “clean ‘em and fry ‘em” on a daily basis, end volleyball games in oiled-up flexing, and why I can blame all my speeding tickets on Kenny Loggins,” he joked in a long caption.[/row]

All jokes aside, Powell explained that being a part of one of his favorite films on the tenth anniversary of his move to LA to become an actor was a dream come true.

[row]”In all seriousness, I just had my ten year anniversary since moving from Austin to Los Angeles to give acting a shot. Victories are rare, dreams are mostly broken, so I am truly grateful for everyone in my life who’s helped me beat the odds to get into this flight suit. This role is a dream come true. [/row]

Earlier this summer it was reported that Glen Powell was in the running to step into the coveted role of Goose’s son in the highly anticipated sequel along with Nicolas Hoult and Miles Teller. The role eventually went to Teller, but Powell was absolutely born to be in the Top Gun universe (I mean just look at him in aviators!) and we are really looking forward to seeing who he will be playing. Maybe Iceman’s son?

Powell joins returning Top Gun alums Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer, reprising their iconic roles of Maverick and Iceman, who are heading back to The Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School as instructors in a film that Cruise has promised will surely possess the same spirit as the beloved original.

[row]“It’s going to be a competition film like the first one, and it’s going to be in the same vein and the same tone as the first with the need for speed and big, fast machines….there’s gonna be jets,” he told Access Hollywood last year.[/row]

Tom Cruise’s Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski will be helming the film after Top Gun’s original director Tony Scott passed away. Scott’s original 1986 film was a resounding success, earning over $350 million at the box office and winning the Oscar for Best Original Song for “Take My Breath Away”.

Powell most recently starred in the recent Netflix film Set It Up and also had a prominent role as astronaut John Glenn in Hidden Figures. TV fans may recognize him from Fox’s Scream Queens. He will soon appear in another Netflix original movie alongside Lily James and Matthew Goode in The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society and has a project titled Devotion in development, but there aren’t any additional details about it just yet.

The film hits theaters July 2019! Are you excited to see Glenn Powell join Top Gun: Maverick? Let us know!
