Here’s Why Charlie Hunnam Won’t Be Showing Up on ‘Mayans MC’

Kurt Sutter may have confirmed that some of your favorite Sons of Anarchy characters would be appearing in flashbacks on the upcoming spinoff Mayans MC, but don’t expect to see the Prince of Charming, Jax Teller,  showing up in any of them.

Charlie Hunnam who played the leading man on Sons throughout its seven-season, which ended with his death in the series finale, recently spoke with Entertainment Tonight while promoting his new film, Papillon, about why he won’t reprise his role as Jax Teller for the upcoming spinoff – and his answer is quite honorable in our opinion.

[row]“No, no… I had the deepest experience of my career coming out of that. I had become that character, had become so deeply integrated into who I was, I literally didn’t realize until the day we wrapped and we put him to rest and I felt I went through a period of two or three weeks of, like, real bereavement.”[/row]

[row]”I have his cut [leather vest] and, you know, people have been to my house and asked if they could try it on and I [say] ‘No one will ever put that cut on again’ and ‘We got to respect that dude. He’s not with us anymore. So I would never bring him back from the dead for something like that… It was seven years of my life. He sort of became sacred to me.”[/row]

Hunnam played the character brilliantly and Jax’s chapter came to a satisfying close in the series finale, so while fans would surely love to see him again, it makes total sense why he should remain separate from the Mayans MC world. Fear not though! Sutter has promised plenty of Sons Easter eggs and has even hinted that he would like to explore Jax’s sons Abel and Thomas after their father’s death. So, even though Hunnam won’t be on camera, his spirit and name will still be alive and well. A teaser for the series has already paid tribute to Jax’s character, further proving this point.

One Sons character that we know will definitely be back is Emilio Rivera who played Mayans president Marcus Alvarez throughout the series. Alvarez’s cousin Obispo “Bishop” Losa (played by Michael Irby) will be President of Mayans MC Santo Padre Charter, which the show will be following, so there will definitely be one guaranteed familiar face.

Mayans MC will take place four years after the events of Sons of Anarchy. It follows EZ Reyes (JD Pardo), a former golden boy with the American Dream just within his reach, who is now fresh out of prison and prospecting for Mayans Motorcycle Club. FX released a full trailer during SDCC, which you can check that out below or for a full breakdown head here.
