Penn Badgley’s ‘YOU’ Will Move to Netflix for Season 2

Just as Penn Badgley’s character Joe on YOU is moving on to his next venture, so is the series. Despite the fact that Lifetime renewed the drama thriller for a second season ahead of its debut, it’s been announced that season two will be moving over to Netflix instead. The network has cited low viewership and the desire to focus on original movies as the reasoning behind the shift.

[row]“Lifetime had an incredible experience working with Greg Berlanti, Sera Gamble and the entire team on YOU for Season 1. We wish the cast and crew the best as the series continues on at Netflix and can’t wait for the opportunity to work with the creative team again,” the network said in a statement. [/row]

Adapted for television from the Caroline Kepnes novel of the same name, YOU follows Joe Goldberg (Badgley), a young man who works in a bookstore in New York City when he meets a woman named Beck (Once Upon a Time’s Elizabeth Lail) and relies on his savvy internet know-how (aka stalking abilities) to make her fall in love with him.

Lifetime’s first season followed the entirety of Kepnes’ novel and Netflix’s sophomore season will loosely follow her second book titled Hidden Bodies. Prior to the move, Lifetime did tease earlier this year that “Joe will head to Los Angeles and venture into even riskier, bolder territory as he faces the darkest parts of his past as he tries to make a future for himself and the woman he loves.”

[row]“There’s a lot of great story in the second book that we’re going to be able to do but in our way. Los Angeles is a completely different vibe… We started the writers’ room for Season 2 by being like, ‘Joe moves to L.A. and he completely hates it. Let’s talk about how much fun that is.,” Sera Gamble, executive producer for YOU, told TVLine. [/row]

Season one also starred Pretty Little Liars alum Shay Mitchell, Luca Padovan, Nicole Kang, and Kathryn Gallagher.  Arrowverse helmer Greg Berlanti serves as co-showrunner alongside Sera Gamble. You can catch up on season one of YOU on Lifetime!
