Netflix Cancels Marvel’s ‘The Punisher’ & ‘Jessica Jones’
Marvel and Netflix teamed up in 2013 for a four series relationship which included the two shows, along with a limited series, The Defenders.
Netflix said Monday, “Marvel’s The Punisher will not return for a third season on Netflix. Showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the terrific crew, and exceptional cast including star Jon Bernthal, delivered an acclaimed and compelling series for fans, and we are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come.”
“In addition, in reviewing our Marvel programming, we have decided that the upcoming third season will also be the final season for Marvel’s Jessica Jones. We are grateful to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, star Krysten Ritter and the entire cast and crew, for three incredible seasons of this groundbreaking series, which was recognized by the Peabody Awards among many others”.The partnership between Marvel and Netflix changed when Disney announced its own streaming service, which will include (Disney owned) Marvel properties. Disney +. Netflix closed out the statement with a thanks for the partnership they did have.“We are grateful to Marvel for five years of our fruitful partnership and thank the passionate fans who have followed these series from the beginning.”
It was announced last week that The Punisher star Jon Bernthal is joining The Many Saints of Newark, a prequel to The Sopranos.
He shared a cryptic goodbye to The Punisher on instagram Monday morning.
Although it is sad to see Netflix and Marvel slowly cut all remaining ties, we can take solace in knowing that Disney + has much more content up its Sorcerer Mickey sleeve for us to enjoy, and perhaps this isn’t the last we see of The Punisher.
