Disney’s Live-Action ‘The Little Mermaid’ in Talks with Harry Styles for Prince Eric Role

According to THR, Disney’s upcoming live-action is in talks with One Direction heartthrob Harry Styles to play Ariel’s under the sea love interest, Prince Eric. If cast, Styles will join singer Halle Bailey (Ariel), Jacob Tremblay (Flounder), and Awkwafina (Scuttle) for the upcoming production. Styles made his first acting debut in Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning drama Dunkirk that grossed over $526 million worldwide.

Recently, Styles was in the running for the lead in Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming Elvis biopic. However, Austin Butler was announced earlier this week as having nabbed the role.

The new Disney live-action will showcase well-known songs from the 1989 animated classic. THR reported Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda (Moana) and original composer Alan Menken will also be adding new material for the film.

Menken is no stranger to Ariel and her underwater world as he composed the animated original songs Under the Sea, Part of Your World and Kiss the Girl. Marc Platt, the executive producer on Guy Ritchie’s live-action Aladdin, will also produce this project.

Production on Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid will begin in early 2020.
