Spider-Man Could be Leaving the MCU

Last night was an exciting one in terms of news. Everywhere you looked, Sony and Spider-Man were trending.

I’m here today to basically provide a run down of what actually happened between Marvel and Sony last night.

It was reported that the two studios, Marvel and Sony, were unable to come to an agreement over the future of Spider-Man. Disney asked for future films to be financed at 50/50 with Kevin Feige remaining as the primary producer.

As it stands, the current arrangement dictates that Marvel receive 5% of first-dollar gross and all of the merchandise revenue. It has become apparent that both studios have been unable to find a compromise and as a result they have been forced to… divorce.

However, it may not be all that it seems. Obviously, with news such as this there has been a lot of negativity towards Sony. They’ve taken Spider-Man away from the MCU, how dare they.

Well, according to Variety, Disney have allegedly expressed concern over Feige’s workload. With the various mergers and acquisitions, Feige certainly has a lot on his plate.

As someone who doesn’t want to take sides in this, I can understand why this has happened.

In Sony’s Defense:
  1. Spider-Man is Sony’s biggest money making asset. Far From Home is currently Sony’s highest grossing movie. Why change that.
  2. If Feige is swamped with work, instead of being in charge of the entire project they could just hand it to Sony especially since Marvel don’t own the character.

Sony Pictures recently shared a statement via their Twitter which you can read here:

‘Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise. We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film.

We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own.

Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.’

So what does this mean for the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

It is believed that Sony are developing two more Spider-Man movies, with Tom Holland reprising his role as the masked webslinger. Unless a deal is met, this could end Spider-Man’s involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe which would be a bizarre turn considering how Far From Home ended.

So, we could be waving goodbye to any potential team ups… and the potential erasure of Spider-Man’s current history. Since he is so involved in the MCU, using the story could cause issues so it is indeed possible that Sony will need to initiate a clean slate.

However, having said that, this could open the door to a crossover between Venom and Spider-Man sooner rather than later.

At the moment, it isn’t very clear what this all means. A lot of people seem to be jumping to the same conclusion, that Sony are in the wrong. There are even calls to boycott Sony, yet I feel that they weren’t entirely responsible.

I do believe that there will be future negotiations. At this precise moment, I think both studios are taking a 5 minute breather.

What do you make of this news? Should Sony have agreed to a 50/50 split? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
