7 ‘Game of Thrones’ Deaths We Still Aren’t Over

7 Game of Thrones Deaths We Still Aren’t Over

Fans learned early on never to fall in love with a character because creator George R.R. Martin shows no mercy when it comes to killing people off. Out of the hundreds of deaths that have occurred during the course of the show, we’ve collected seven of the most heart-wrenching deaths that we are still not over in honor of the season seven premier this Sunday.

1. Eddard Stark

The death that really started it all and truly taught us that no one is safe. Nobody expected the lead character, the one who was on all the promotional posters, to meet his end in the penultimate episode of season one (though we should have seen this coming because Sean Bean never gets to live). Eddard was such a good person and probably one of the last in Westros. But if not for his death, we wouldn’t have the rest of the show. A necessary death, but still one that we wish never had to happen.

2. Khal Drogo

Another early, unexpected death, Khal Drogo was probably the fiercest warrior, yet he nearly met his end due to a poisoned blade. To make matters worse, in a ritual to save him, everything went wrong and he was reduced to a vegetable. Daenerys then made the decision to smother him with a pillow and end his life. Another necessary death because it led to Daenerys becoming independent and learning that she is in fact the Mother of Dragons.

3. Robb and Catelyn Stark

The Red Wedding still haunts us. In the ultimate betrayal by Houses Frey and Bolton, the heads of Winterfell and House Stark were both taken out; Catelyn forced to watch her son and grandchild murdered before having her own throat slit. George R.R. Martin has even admitted that this was the scene that he was most dreading when writing A Storm of Swords. He actually skipped the chapter and came back to it later on.

4. Oberyn Martell

Oberyn was such a fun character, but his free spirit and cockiness got in the way when he was defending Tyrion’s honor and fighting the Mountain. Thinking he had won, Oberyn was trying to get a confession out of his opponent for the slaughter of his sister when the Mountain suddenly got up and smashed his head in. It was such a surprising and brutal moment.

5. Shireen Baratheon

She was so young, so innocent. Shireen Baratheon was burned at the stake as an offering to god in return for a vicotry for her father Stannis. Her shrieks were so haunting as we watched her mother struggle to get to her. So terrible, so unnecessary. Her death did see justice though as Stannis lost the battle and was killed.

6. Hodor

This death was a new level of brutal. We finally learned the truth behind his name, only to find out it’s because a young Hodor accidentally experience his own death and was forever traumatized. To be torn apart by wraiths is a horrible way to go, but Hodor died a hero. This will  be one of those scenes that we remember forever. Mostly because we still get a little misty eyed when asked to hold the door for someone.

7. Margeary Tyrell

I am still so heavily in denial about this because I really thought Margeary would make it all the way to the end. She was Cersei’s equal and had the potential to take the Iron Throne. But the ego of the High Sparrow got in the way and Margeary and Loras were taken out in the season six finale. This sequence was so expertly done that it’s hard to be completely bitter about the moment, but I am still not anywhere close to being over it.
