A New ‘Sharknado’ Augmented Reality Mobile Game Draws Inspiration from ‘Pokemon Go’
Have you ever wanted to follow in the footsteps of the Sharknado franchise’s superhero Fin Shepard? Well, now is your chance!
Starting Monday, a brand new augmented reality game featuring the Sharknado universe will be rolling out to Android and iOS mobile devices near you! It’s basically Pokemon Go but with sharks and Sharknados! Syfy teamed up with AR Glimpse in order to develop a game called Sharknado: ShARkmented Reality and it will put you, the player, into the shoes of Fin Shepard (played by Ian Ziering) and April (played by Tara Reid) as you battle your way through a Sharknado-filled world.
Players will be able to choose from a variety of virtual weapons in order to defeat the sharks, including Fin’s trusty ol’ chainsaw, just like in the Sharknado films. Each time a player levels up, new sharks and new weapons will be revealed presenting the player with increasingly more difficult challenges. Just to make the player’s experience even more Sharknado-like, the game will pull some aspects directly from the films, such as the theme music.
In addition to the augmented gameplay, the app will also include a Sharknado photo booth which was previously featured in an earlier app called the Go Shark Yourself app. As you level up within the Sharknado: ShARkmented Reality game, you will also unlock super cool items to use the photo booth portion of the app.
Syfy’s senior VP digital Matthew Chiavelli told The Hollywood Reporter:
“It’s a great opportunity to try something new. We’re always looking at what’s next. We saw this concept as a great fit for Sharknado. I’d be lying if I didn’t say Pokemon Go was an influence.”
