Activists and Celebrities Walked the 2018 Golden Globes Red Carpet Together
The Golden Globes stand as one of the most anticipated award shows of the year, every year. This year was no exception. There were incredible nominees in all categories from some of the years biggest film and television series’ and then there was the dress code.
Now, we always want to find out what people will be wearing when they show up. What looks will stand out on the red carpet, what looks will be painted across the audience and the stage. We still wanted to know what people were wearing this year, but the bigger importance came from why.
Actors and Actresses flooded the red carpet with a sea of black, and the reason behind the movement was to stand in solidarity with the Times Up movement. #TimesUp first hit the public with a New Years Day social media push, however, it had been building for months.
Times Up isn’t just a social and professional movement, the women in Hollywood have set up a fund for abused and harassed women everywhere. The fund will allow them legal support as many have been assaulted, harassed, and silenced in pursuit of their careers and dreams.
In addition, the celebrities behind and in support of Times Up are making public statements. Be it with words or shows of solidarity and tonight, at the Golden Globes, 8 actresses brought activists with them.
The New York Times gave names and descriptions of the work done by each activist that attended the Golden Globes with 8 celebrities.
Ai-jen Poo – Ai-jen is the director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance and organizes immigrant worker women. She attended the Golden Globes with Meryl Streep.
Mónica Ramírez – not only pushes for Latina empowerment but stands up against sexual violence towards farmworkers. She attended the awards with Laura Dern.
Tarana Burke – Founder of the #MeToo Movement and the senior director of Girls for Gender Equity, a nonprofit. Burke was the guest of Michelle Williams.

Marai Larasi – Larasi is the executive director of a British group of organizations working to end violence against minority and black women, Imkaan. She attended with Emma Watson.
Rosa Clemente – Clemente, in her community, focuses on political prisoners, Puerto Rican independence, and voter engagement. She was Susan Sarandon’s guest for the Golden Globes.
Calina Lawrence – as a member of a Suquamish Tribe, she’s also a singer and activist for Native American treaty and water rights. She attended the awards with Shailene Woodley.
Saru Jayaraman – Jayaraman attended the Globes with Amy Poehler and stands as an advocate for workplace justice in restaurants.
Billie Jean King – Attending with Emma Stone, who portrayed her in Battle of the Sexes, King is the tennis champ behind founding the Women’s Tennis Association.
The women spoke of their activism as they walked the red carpet and the promise of sisterhood was highlighted. It’s not just a movement in Hollywood, it’s a movement everywhere, and it’s just getting started.
