Adam Sandler’s New Netflix Film Got a Four-Minute Standing Ovation at Cannes

Netflix films have been at the center of controversy at this year’s Cannes Film Festival however, Adam Sandler’s new film, The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) received quite a tremendous  response from those in attendance.  On Sunday night, following the film premiere, the audience responded with a four minute standing ovation.

Noah Baumbach directs a stellar cast in addition to Sandler including Dustin Hoffman, Ben Stiller and Emma Thompson.  Not too shabby of a cast, if you ask us.  The entire cast had tears in their eyes after the screening, clearly taken aback by the glorious response from the crowd.

The film is a drama/comedy combo (or a dramedy) and follows Sandler and Stiller who play estranged brothers who are brought back together when their father (Hoffman) is hospitalized.  Their father is an sculptor and the two half brothers come together to celebrate his life’s work.  Thompson plays Sandler and Stiller’s mother and Hoffman’s wife.

Earlier in the day, the press got the opportunity to screen the film and it was met with pretty solid positive reviews.  Many of them even specifically praising Sandler for breaking away from his typical silly comedy style of film to take on a more serious role.

This isn’t the first time Sandler has played in more seriously toned films.  Punch-Drunk Love, Reign Over Me, Funny People and Spanglish all saw Sandler leave comedy mainly to the side and, if you ask me, his true acting ability really showed through in these films.

We are definitely looking forward to seeing The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected).  The film does not yet have a release date from Netflix but hopefully, it will be coming soon to a television near you!
