An Audience Reacts to the Dunkirk Film Trailer
If you somehow managed to miss it, the full-length trailer for Christoper Nolan’s Dunkirk premiered yesterday and it was incredible. The heart-stopping action made you forget to breathe for a moment as you watched some extremely intense footage. Nolan, the cast, and the crew put their all – and then some – into every aspect of Dunkirk and it’s probably our most anticipated movie of the year.
That being said, we saw another highly anticipated movie today, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and before the film, the audience saw the Trailer for Dunkirk on film screen glory. If you thought watching it on your computer was awesome, wait until you see it in a theater.
In our theater, fans were clapping at the trailers before the film. Starting with Star Wars and up until Dunkirk, the theater laughed, had a bit of small talk, and applauded loudly with each trailer that appeared. When the beginning of the Dunkirk trailer came on the screen, however, the audience fell completely silent.
The trailer, at almost two and a half minutes long, stole the breath of some of the audience members. The audience was captivated watching the airstrikes, seeing the men drowning, and the ones nearly drowning; as well as the heart-wrenching scene where Cillian Murphy asks where the ship is going, and when he hears Dunkirk, the look on his face is absolutely broken.
To know the story of the Miracle of Dunkirk is to only feel a fraction of the pain, fear, and loss that those on the island of Dunkirk felt during those days where so many lives were lost. However, Christopher Nolan brings audience members as close to the feeling as he can as he tells the story from three views; land, sea, and air and surrounds you in not just scenes and sounds, but an experience.
As bodies were crushed, soldiers pulled their fallen comrades out of the water, and a bridge with soldiers was obliterated by enemy fire – you saw fear come alive and you felt it too.
After the trailer was over, no one applauded, a guy behind us – who had been vocal about the trailers before – said: ‘It just didn’t feel right to clap for that one…’. An audible sigh left most members in the audience as the trailer drew to a close. It was like you had to remind yourself to breathe.
To lighten the mood, Tom Holland introduced a trailer to Spiderman: Homecoming, but it was evident then, that audiences around the world are eagerly anticipating Dunkirk, but they understand the weight of the film as well.
Christopher Nolan put together an incredible cast, spent time and resources on the film, and made sure – from what we’ve all seen so far – to stay accurate to the heartache and struggle that took place between May 26th and June 4th, 1940.
