‘Avengers: Endgame’ Directors Admit To Using Footage In Trailers Not Found In the Movie to Keep the Plot A Surprise
Joe and Anthony Russo, the brothers responsible for both Avengers: Infinity War and the upcoming Avengers: Endgame, have admitted to using alternate shots for trailers or, sometimes, footage not even found in the final film.
A Comingsoon.net article detailed a recent interview between Empire Magazine and the brothers about their highly anticipated film. During the interview, the Russo’s spoke about how they intend to “keep the film’s marketing department from spoiling the surprises.”
“The thing that’s most important to us is that we preserve the surprise of the narrative,” said Joe Russo. “When I was a kid and saw The Empire Strikes Back at 11 AM on the day it opened, it so profoundly moved me because I didn’t know a damn thing about the story I was going to watch. We’re trying to replicate that experience.”
While some shots from the trailer will appear in the final film, the Russo’s admit to using “all the material that we have at our disposal to create a trailer. We look at the trailer as a very different experience than the movie, and I think audiences are so predictive now that you have to be very smart about how you craft a trailer because an audience can watch a trailer and basically tell you what’s gonna happen in the film.”
Essentially, the Russo’s see the trailer as telling its own story. It exists more to give a feel for the final film, rather than to be an accurate depiction of what audiences will see on opening day. “At our disposal are lots of different shots that we can manipulate through CG to tell a story that we want to tell specifically for the purpose of the trailer and not for the film,” explained Russo.
This is not the first time Marvel has manipulated scenes or shown scenes not found in the theatrical release. Most recently the trailer for Avengers: Infinity War prominently showed the Hulk running alongside other Avengers but when that scene appeared in the film, the Hulk was no where to be found – in fact, he was never seen as the Hulk during that battle.
Looks like audiences will have to wait until April 26th, 2019 to see what’s really going on during Avengers: Endgame. Until then, all we can do is speculate as to how the remaining Avengers will take down Thanos after their devastating losses during the events of Avengers: Infinity War.
