Batwoman Review: “Do Not Resuscitate”
Batwoman only seems to keep getting better with every passing week, but that’s just my opinion. It’s become apparent to me that for a number of reasons it’s never going to be the favorite Arrowverse show, and that’s okay. As long as the show keeps improving the way it has been, I’m pretty much fine with anything. Do Not Resuscitate was another solid chapter in the ongoing saga of Batwoman. We had a psycho kidnap, Jacob, and Mary, Ryan’s love life fell apart and Alice and Ocean got some answers. I’m pretty sure they boned, too.
The reason this specific episode of Batwoman was so good though, I think, is because all three stories intersected perfectly. Each one complimented the other. Alice and Ocean had the map, Mary and Jacob needed the map to calm down Amygdala, and Ryan and Luke had a vested interest in the whole thing. Even Ryan’s girlfriend, Angelique, had her part to play since it was thanks to her to find Ocean. Granted, this was against her will, but she was still involved. That’s gotta count for something.
This episode did a phenomenal job of highlighting just how strong Ryan is. That fight at the beginning was great and she continued to impress far more than Kate ever did. My biggest gripe with Kate Kane was despite all this military training she regularly got her ass kicked. Ryan has consistently kicked ass instead, and I’m down for it. If I had one complaint about the new Batwoman it would be the wig, but that’s a personal gripe. Ryan has succeeded in doing all this while literally dying from a terminal illness. Having Luke FINALLY acknowledge that was a much-needed addition to the show. They couldn’t milk that forever. We’ve grown attached to Ryan and watching her lose Angelique is a legitimately sad moment. Ryan fights so hard to do the right thing and just keeps losing things.
Alice continues to be stronger this season than she ever was in season one. Do Not Resuscitate explored the more human side of Alice. She hasn’t always been this way. Season 1 made it apparent that she’d lost her mind somewhere along the way, but… was it just me or did Sfiyah hint that she was the one who turned Alice heartless? I don’t think Alice will ever become a full-on hero but if she continues down this road she’ll make one hell of a villain.
The only character I’m not convinced still needs to be around is Sophie. I mean, she works as a liaison between the crows and team Batwoman, and it’s certainly interesting unraveling her history with Ryan. Eh, whatever.
I’m REALLY loving this newest season of Batwoman, and if you haven’t checked it out give it an honest chance. You might find something to like because it’s quickly becoming solid.
