‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Gave Me ‘Somebody to Love’ at the Globes!

It was a big night for Bohemian Rhapsody during the Golden Globes this past weekend. Not only did it win the coveted Best Motion Picture – Drama category, actor Rami Malek also claimed the award for Best Actor – Motion Picture – Drama for his portrayal of the incomparable Freddie Mercury! Considering movie critic reviews for Bohemian Rhapsody were less than stellar and that A Star Is Born was seen as a ‘shoe-in’, it’s win did come as quite a surprise… a well-deserved surprise.

Admittedly I have not seen a Star is Born, which has received high praise from fans and critics alike but I was a bit dismayed to see some ‘Bohemian backlash’ via social media. I may not be an industry professional but I do enjoy great entertainment. Bohemian Rhapsody touched my heart and soul on a level deeper than any movie I have seen in a very long time, reminding me of music’s profound impact on our lives. From sporting events (We Will Rock You, We Are the Champions) and road trips (Bohemian Rhapsody) to fun flicks (Flash Gordon) and party anthems (Another One Bites the Dust), this was the music that made for some of my most unforgettable memories. Chills ran through me as I sat in the theater to hear those first beats to songs that brought me back to a time of reckless abandon. Freddie Mercury was an icon, yet I sadly knew very little about him while he was alive. Even though tears rolled down my cheeks as I watched his story unfold, I felt grateful to learn more of his overwhelming yet uplifting journey.

I do respect that not all have my appreciation for Bohemian Rhapsody, and while I felt disheartened by the those that deemed it to be an unworthy winner, it never once occurred to me to become defensive. I did ponder actually watching A Star Is Born prior to writing this article, but reconsidered. No matter how fantastic a film it might be, and I will indeed watch it in the future, it will not change my emotions toward the heartfelt Queen biopic. ♥

It is not my call to say whether Bohemian Rhapsody should have won the Golden Globe over A Star Is Born, I will leave that to the ‘experts’. I just know that they ARE Killer Queen!
