Breaking Groundhog Day News: Punxsutawney Phil Says 6 More Weeks of Winter
Happy Groundhog Day, everyone! This year, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow which means he’s predicting there will be 6 more weeks of winter.
The festivities of the day originate in German legend dating back to the 1800’s. If the groundhog sees his shadow, more winter is on the way. If he doesn’t see his shadow, we can expect warmer temperatures and an early spring right around the corner.
Dressed in their finest, members of the groundhog inner circle revealed Phil’s forecast at sunrise, just before 7:30 am on Thursday.
Records dating to 1887 show Phil predicting 6 more weeks of winter 102 times while forecasting an early spring just 18 times, including last year. Just how often is he right, you may ask? Well, according to the National Centers of Environmental Information, Phil gets it right about 50% of the time. Check out the graphic below which charts his predictions over time.
