‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Reboot Writer Responds to Concerned Fans

It’s been under a week since a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was announced, and so far, fans have had some pretty mixed reactions to the news.

When discussions began regarding a reboot of the series, right off the bat, there was one major stipulation that had to be met before the project could move forward – original series creator Joss Whedon had to be on board.

Now that is has been announced that the reboot is moving forward with Whedon on as an executive producer, fans still seem unsure and we can’t blame them. The reboot series is currently said to be taking a contemporary turn within the Buffy universe and will follow a new slayer rather than Buffy Summers.

That’s where Midnight, Texas creator Monica Breen comes in to play. Breen is onboard to write and executive produce the series as well as being the showrunner for the series. On Thursday, Breen took to Twitter to reassure fans that the new series will not try to replicate what made the original series so special. Instead, it will be its own show. Breen wrote:

[row]”For some genre writers, it’s Star Wars. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my Star Wars. Before I became a writer, I was a fan. For seven seasons, I watched Buffy Summers grow up, find love, kill that love. I watched her fight, and struggle to slay.

There is only one Buffy. One Xander, one Willow, Giles, Cordelia, Oz, Tara, Kendra, Spike, Angel… They can’t be replaced. Joss Whedon’s brilliant and beautiful series can’t be replicated. I wouldn’t try to.

But here we are, twenty years later… And the world seems a lot scariers. So maybe, it could be time to meet a new Slayer…”[/row]

A new slayer wouldn’t be so bad. While we love the original characters and cast, and the original show holds a very special place in our hearts, a fresh, new look at Sunnydale could be absolutely amazing.

The Buffy reboot is in development at Fox 21 TV Studios (a division of 20th Century Fox TV). In addition to Whedon, original series’ executive producers Gail Berman, Fran Kazui and Kaz Kazui are returning as well as Joe Earley from Berman’s Jackal Group

While details are still scarce, we do know the reboot will be a new, contemporary version which still honors the mythology of the original series. The producers of the series describe the reboot as follows: “Like our world, it will be richly diverse, and like the original, some aspects of the series could be seen as metaphors for issues facing us all today.”

The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series aired from 1997 through 2003 and starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan, David Boreanaz, Nicholas Brendon, Charisma Carpenter, James Marsters and Eliza Dushku. During its time on air, the series earned a huge following made up of some of the most hardcore and devoted fans around.
