Bungie Jumps From Activision, Their ‘Destiny’ Still In Hand

In 2010 Bungie made waves with a publishing agreement with Activision. The huge publisher was on top of the entertainment world with Call Of Duty and Blizzard in hand. As of now however, they are a dollar short in the drawer. Bungie and Activision have mutually parted ways as of today.

Bungie.net reads-

With Activision, we created something special. To date, Destiny has delivered a combination of over 50 million games and expansions to players all around the world. More importantly, we’ve also witnessed a remarkable community – tens of millions of Guardians strong – rise up and embrace Destiny, to play together, to make and share memories, and even to do truly great things that reach far beyond the game we share, to deliver a positive impact on people’s everyday lives.

We have enjoyed a successful eight-year run and would like to thank Activision for their partnership on Destiny. Looking ahead, we’re excited to announce plans for Activision to transfer publishing rights for Destiny to Bungie. With our remarkable Destiny community, we are ready to publish on our own, while Activision will increase their focus on owned IP projects.

Destiny has has been a major IP for Activision, so it is incredible that they would let Bungie go, let alone take Destiny with them. There had to be major money on the line, or Activision did not truly have the hold on the game that we may have thought. My guess is Bungie learned their lesson with Halo, which Microsoft had the full rights to. In the contract with Activision, Bungie most likely did everything possible to write language into their contract guaranteeing this in the future after multiple releases.

Bungie also seems to have built up some reserves of money considering they look to be publishing their next releases. One wonders if Destiny will stay their future after this, or if the developers have some ideas beyond to create. A new IP along with eventual expansions and sequels for Destiny would be magnificent.
