‘Call of Duty’ 2019 Confirmed
A new installment of juggernaut video game franchise Call of Duty has officially been ‘leaked’ for 2019, surprising no one. The news comes out of the Activision/Blizzard earnings report, and also indicates the return of a single-player campaign, something 2018’s installment, Black Ops 4 (stylized as Black Ops IIII), was sorely lacking.
There has been no word yet about the setting of the new game, which should release in October or November, if history is any indicator, but there is plenty of speculation. The earnings report, and audio taken from an investor call this past week, indicate a game “rooted in the history” of Call of Duty. Speculators theorize that this could mean a return to the mega-popular Modern Warfare storyline and universe. Others believe that gamers may finally get a sequel to the underrated Call of Duty: Ghosts.
The intel also indicates a massive multi-player world, along with co-op game play. This most likely, coupled with the return of a single player campaign, will most likely spell doom for the Fortnite and Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds-inspired Blackout mode, a battle royale game mode.
It’s going to feature an entirely new campaign, a huge and expansive multiplayer world, and of course, some fun co-op gameplay. But from day one, what gets me really excited, is every time we’ve shown this title internally, it just creates a ton of buzz…I think it’s going to be really worth it. We can’t wait to share with the world.
Call of Duty began as a franchise in 2003, developed by Infinity Ward. IW was joined the following year by developer Treyarch, forming a tandem development cycle. Sledgehammer Games joined the cycle with Advanced Warfare in 2014. The franchise focused on World War II until 2007’s Modern Warfare, which brought the franchise to present day (or near future). From there, additional installments focused on the Vietnam and Cold War eras, eventually rocketing the series to the far future in Black Ops III and Infinite Warfare. Call of Duty returned to its roots with Call of Duty WWII in 2017, which proved very popular, before exploring the time between Black Ops II and Black Ops III with 2018’s installment.
Expect more intel in coming months, as Activision and Infinity Ward ramp up to a fall release for the 16th Call of Duty game, expected to be released on X-Box One, Playstation 4, and PC.
