Cassidy Freeman Joins Danny McBride and John Goodman in HBO Pilot

Danny McBride’s new HBO pilot The Righteous Gemstones has just added another actor to their ranks! TVLine reports that Smallville and Longmire alum Cassidy Freeman has just been cast alongside McBride in the televangelist comedy.

A religiously-geared series, The Righteous Gemstones follows Jesse Gemstone (McBride), “the eldest son and heir to the throne of a world-famous televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed, and charitable work, all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.” Freeman will be playing Jesse’s wife, Amber Gemstone, who “gave up a career in journalism to devote her life to her husband and his church.”

The series also stars Roseanne’s John Goodman as the Gemstone patriarch named Eli who is  “known for his aggressive salvation techniques, his worldwide ministries, and his award-winning weekly television program.” Workaholic’s star Adam Devine has been cast to play Jesse’s younger brother Kevin Gemstone.

Most recently, Freeman wrapped up a six-season stint on the A&E/Netflix drama Longmire where she played Cady Longmire for 63 episodes. Other notable TV credits include her role as Lex Luther’s half-sister Tess Mercer on The WB/CW’s Smallville, which also starred Tom Welling, Michael Rosenbaum, and Kristin Kreuk. She has also had some recent guest-starring roles on NCIS: New Orleans and Doubt.

The Righteous Gemstones pilot will be written and directed by McBride, who also worked with HBO on Vice Principals andEastbound & Down. While it’s certainly an out-there plot, with the cast that he’s putting together and his brilliant record for comedy on HBO, we have full faith in The Righteous Gemstones.
