Charlie Hunnam Joins ‘True History of The Kelly Gang’ With Russell Crowe

Fresh off the theatrical release of his latest drama Papillon and a newly announced movie role in Jungleland, he’s now joining the cast of Justin Kurzel’s True History of The Kelly Gang. The film is already starring an impressive cast including Captain Fantastic’s George MacKay, Gladiator’s Russell Crowe X-Men’s Nicholas Hoult, and The Babadook’s Essie Davis.

True History of The Kelly Gang is based on based on the Booker Prize-winning Peter Carey novel of the same name. It follows notorious bushranger Ned Kelly (MacKay), one of the world’s greatest outlaws, and the colonial badlands from which he rose. The film will be directed by Kurzel, who most recently helmed Assassin’s Creed, from a screenplay written by Shaun Grant.

Liz Watts from Porchlight Films will be producing in addition to Hal Vogel From Daybreak Pictures, and Kruzel. The film will be wrapping principal photography on Sept.8

Hunnam starred on FX’s Sons of Anarchy for seven seasons from 2008-2014 and since hanging up his vest he has appeared in a number of films including Crimson Peak, The Lost City of Z, and King Aruther: Legend of the Sword. His latest film Papillon, which he stars in with Mr. Robot’s Rami Malek and his Sons co-star Tommy Flanagan, is currently playing in theaters. It was announced last week that Hunnam had joined Max Winkler’s Jungleland alongside Jack O’Connell and Jessica Barden. The film follows a reluctant bare-knuckle boxer (O’Connell) and his brother (Hunnam) as they travel across the country for one last fight, but an unexpected travel companion (Barden) exposes the cracks in their bond along the way. It currently does not have a release date.
