Chrissy Metz Previews Kate and Toby’s ‘This Is Us’ Wedding
NBC’s This Is Us will be wrapping up its sophomore season tonight with a season finale fitting for a family drama – a wedding! Kate and Toby will finally be tying the knot, in an episode that’s sure to bring both sad and happy tears.
“Like Kate, it is unconventional, emotional, and unexpected… it’s upbeat and joyous through a very important catharsis.” Metz told EW.
After two seasons full of ups and downs, including some clarity about Jack’s death’s impact on her and a heartbreaking miscarriage, Kate’s wedding marks a whole new chapter for her.
“The finale is a completely new start for Kate.”
Of course, the day will have somewhat of a dark cloud over it as the show will acknowledge Jack’s absence and the fact that the won’t be there to walk Kate down the aisle.
“Obviously, it’s been her life’s dream to find a man who her father would approve of but never measure up to. Now that she has, it’s devastating that he won’t be there… physically.”
Her emphasis on the word physically definitely stands out as it appears Jack will definitely be there in spirit. In the season finale’s promo we saw a brief clip of a dream or alternate universe where Jack is alive, old, and well and having some sort ceremony (perhaps a vow renewal?) with Rebecca.
“It’s a really joyous finale in a season marked by a lot of sadness and tragedy. It’s about a lot of characters looking forward and has an incredible amount of uplift to it,” executive producer Isaac Aptaker said.
However, even though both of Kate’s parents won’t physically be there on her special day, Toby’s will. Dan Lauria and Wendie Malick have been cast to play Toby’s parents and according to Metz, they’re going to be quite the pair.
“His parents are everything and nothing you’d expect.”
