Chrissy Metz Talks Kate’s Bombshell News on ‘This Is Us’

Fans of This Is Us have learned very quickly that surprises in the series can happen anytime. Not only can they come out of absolutely nowhere, the show can lead you to believe one thing for an entire episode and switch it up at the last moment.

Both of those sentiments have been proven lately, in big ways. One instance is when we got a hint about Jack’s death. The next came on Tuesday where Kate found out some big news in the last seconds of the episode that threw us all for a loop.

The entire episode, at least Kate’s part, focused on her being very strict on herself when it came to working out, eating right, and losing weight. She was doing everything in her power to make sure any downtime she had was spent toning her body, and we started to wonder if she was going down the path of an eating disorder.

So imagine our joy, and the joy of other fans at home, when we learned that the reason she’d been so careful about her weight was that she’s expecting.

Chrissy Metz recently spoke about what that storyline means for her and for the future of the series, and she’s as excited about the news as all of us are, too.

Not only is she excited for her character on the series, Chrissy is thrilled about the fact that the story is being done in mainstream media. Even if that means Kate’s life is exciting and sometimes exhausting.

I love the fact that obviously she’s having relations out of wedlock. Everything is really unconventional, and I love that they’re talking about plus-size pregnancy. I love that it’s not like, Oh, here’s a plus-size girl just sitting in the corner, wishing her life would start.’ She’s actually living her life, and all of these really exciting things are happening, and it’s really nice. Because I don’t think it’s been portrayed — well, really anywhere. Especially network television. So I’m excited about it.

She went on to say that she’s known about the plot for months but was unable to speak about it. This Is Us is as secretive about their series details as Marvel is about the MCU.

I guess I knew when we had a meeting during the summer right before the season was going to start. I’ve been really excited, obviously, [but] not able to talk about it. We all had meetings with the showrunners and got to understand really the bones of what was going on. And, of course, as we get the script, we get to read the meat of it all. It’s very exciting — and it’s uncharted territory.

Speaking of uncharted territory, Chrissy went on to talk about what this means for Kate and for Toby as well. Especially in terms of the relief we saw on Kate’s face when the doctor told her that the baby was fine, and growing well. It took Kate back to an episode in the beginning when she wondered if she could even get pregnant. Plus, would anyone notice?

It goes back to the second episode when she goes to the Hollywood party and her and Toby just started dating. She’s in that drunken stupor of really being honest with her emotions, and she says, “If I can even get pregnant, will people even notice? Will people even believe that I’m pregnant?” So now that she is, there’s so many emotions: Will she be a mom like her mother? And when she’s feeling good about herself, will she able to pursue singing? And trying to figure out all of her life and bring in another life to the world, that’s a huge responsibility. How is Toby going to be as a dad? I’m sure perfect. And what does it mean for their relationship? How sad will she be that her father’s not here?

In terms of Toby, Chrissy believes part of the reason she’s yet to tell him about the pregnancy is that she’s protecting him. The first weeks of any pregnancy, high risk or not, are delicate – she doesn’t want to tell him too soon.

Like most women, whether they’re high-risk pregnancy or overweight or never had a baby, or they’re older, there’s always this thought of, “I don’t want to tell anybody too soon, I don’t want to get their hopes up, I don’t want to get my hopes up, I don’t want to make it real because then I can be disappointed and have my heart broken.” So, yeah, I think she’s protecting Toby, even though it might seem a little selfish because, of course, he would be over the moon. But yeah, she’s afraid, she’s afraid of it becoming real, and then she’s felt a lot in her life that she’s disappointed people, including herself, and she doesn’t want any of that.

Chrissy went a lot more in detail about what to expect next with Kate and Toby, with Kate and Rebecca, and how the baby will impact Kate as a woman who was growing into herself for the first time. You can read the interview in full, here.

Were you as shocked as we were to hear the news at the end of the episode?
