‘COLONY’: Highlights of episode 3.01 ‘Maquis’

Colony season 3 premiere brings a new location, same old Snyder.

Fans of USA Network’s Colony are thrilled for the arrival of season 3. The rabid fan base has waited over a year for the new season to arrive. Episode 3.01 was a feast for the eyes with the Bowmans setting up camp in a new location. They also have a new “family member” in tow.

New home

When we last see the Bowmans at the end of Colony season 2, they have just escaped the Los Angeles Bloc with the help of Alan Snyder. Six months later we find the Bowmans and Snyder living in a cabin in the vicinity of Black Bear. Alan Snyder has assimilated into the Bowman family unit, sometimes begrudgingly,  sharing chores and playing cards with Gracie.

They have set up a functional and pleasant lifestyle out in the woods of Northern California. Gracie is fishing with her dad while Bram passes the time tracking a nearby radio signal. If only they did not have to worry about being hunted by the RAPs!

The Bowmans have established fine tuned protocols for staying hidden from the occupation. They have a backup cabin and some big guns at their disposal. They are also tracking drone activity. Did I mention that we now see drones with legs?

While the Bowmans look happy and energized, Snyder is looking ragged and run down. The rustic life may not suit him so well.

Spaceship down

The Bowmans are alarmed when a drone walker does not respond in its usual pattern. Later they hear and see drones flying overhead. A large ship explodes in the air. Will insists that Snyder join him in making the trek to a lookout station to survey the damage of the fallen ship.

Poor Snyder tries to keep up with Will whom he describes as having legs that are “nine feet long”. Exaggerate much, Alan? Granted, Will is a tall guy and quick on his feet. Snyder? Not so much.

While at the lookout station, Snyder reveals a theory floating around that the hosts may have enemies. It’s thought that the Factory may be a location for building defense weapons. Will suggests that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”. Snyder scoffs at the idea saying that is also what the Japanese thought in WWII.

Will is displeased that Snyder has been withholding information all these months, which begs the question of what else Snyder may know that he is not telling.

Time to move

Of course, the Bowmans have booby-trapped their cabin for any signs of infiltration. They are suddenly alerted to activity in the area. Greyhats have arrived on the scene. Will says they have to go. Snyder takes Gracie and Charlie to the truck they have hidden away. Once Bram arrives at the truck, Snyder says he needs to go help Will and Katie since they have been looking out for him.

Do you think Snyder is really going to assist Will and Katie who are battling Greyhats left and right? Of course not. Snyder’s true colors are revealed as we learn that he has called the Greyhats to the area via the tracking device he pulls from his pocket at the end of season 2.

Snyder tells the Greyhats he cannot live out there any longer. The Greyhats disagree saying he needs to stay and help them find the missing host. They send him back to the Bowmans but only after whacking him aside the head with a gun to make it look like he narrowly escaped a Greyhat.

Should we take him with us?

Will and Katie are suspicious when Alan arrives back at the truck with his story about being assaulted by the Greyhats. Bram chimes in saying they should let Snyder stay with them since he did indeed help by getting Charlie and Gracie to the truck.

As the truck pulls away, Bram makes contact with the mystery person on the radio. He reveals their names and shares that they have the gauntlet. The mystery contact suggests a meet at a bridge nearby.

What do you think? Has Bram stepped out of line? Has he put his family in danger or brought them closer to rescue? Where do Snyder’s loyalties truly lie, besides with himself, of course?

Things move fast in the premiere of Colony season 3. We learn what the Bowmans have been up to since leaving Los Angeles, but we also have a whole host (see what I did there?) of new questions upon us.
