Danai Gurira Reportedly Leaving ‘The Walking Dead’ in Season 10

The Walking Dead is no stranger to losing prominent characters, and it appears that another lead actor is about to depart the series.

On Friday, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed speculation that Danai Gurira (who plays the bad-ass Michonne on the series) will be exiting The Walking Dead world in the show’s 10th season.

Earlier in the week, it was reported that Gurira was involved with intense contract negotiations regarding the upcoming seasons for the series. THR reports that she has signed a limited contract for season 10 meaning Gurira will only appear in a handful of episodes dispersed throughout the course of the full season. Her exit from the series could possibly be a link or connection between the show and the previously announced films currently in the works and beginning production later this year.

Gurira would be the third leading actor to exit the series following in the footsteps of Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan who both exited the show in its ninth season. Gurira’s departure is not entirely surprising given her additional successes outside of the television series. She’s received critical acclaim for her role in Marvel’s Academy Award-nominated Black Panther. Additionally, she is an accomplished playwright and passionate philanthropist.

At this time, neither AMC nor representatives for Gurira have made an official comment.
