DC Brings on James Gunn to Write and Possibly Direct ‘Suicide Squad 2’

James Gunn has been chosen by DC and Warner Brothers to write the script for Suicide Squad 2, The Wrap reported Tuesday.

The project will be less of a sequel, and more of its own take on the DC property featuring Deadshot, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Captain Boomerang and Killer Croc. The supervillains will be recruited by the government for missions too “dirty” for heroes like Batman and Superman. He will also most likely direct, but that is still to be determined.

Gunn was fired from Disney and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise as director because of some controversial tweets that had been dug up against him by social media critics. Gunn released a statement apologizing, and expressing that he’s grown. The cast and many fans came out to publicly support Gunn and say that they didn’t agree with the outcome.

Disney stood its ground, despite the noise.

Suicide Squad‘s first installment starred Will Smith and Margot Robbie. It brought in $750 million worldwide. It brought to life Jared Leto’s Joker and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, both of which have standalone films in the works.

Robbie will also star in the upcoming Birds of Prey, which will center around the women anti-heroes of Gotham City.

David Ayer directed the first film, but the plan for a sequel never included him, after disagreements with the studio during the editing process. According to The Wrap, he wanted the film to be darker than it already was, and WB executives froze him out of the editing room to make the end result lighter. Gavin O’Connor wrote the first script.

The new film will be produced by Chuck Roven and Peter Safran.
