DC Comics Unveils Rebirth at WonderCon!

At WonderCon this weekend, DC Entertainment displayed its plans for the DC Universe: Rebirth relaunch at a special event held in Petree Hall in the Los Angeles Convention Center. Rebirth will bring some new craziness to the whole DC Universe. It’s not a reboot of the current continuity. Looks to be better structured than when the New 52 was introduced back in 2011. I really like this line so far with Batman and Superman obviously at the front of the line with a few titles each.

Hosted by DC All Access co-host Tiffany Smith, with presentations by Geoff Johns, Dan Didio, Jim Lee and the writers and artists for wave one of the titles launching in June through October.

Here are a few of the titles coming out for June 2016:

Action Comics Which picks up at issue #957, reverting to its old number run, will be the continuation of starring the
Pre-52 Superman. Writer Dan Jurgens with artists Patrick Bircher, Tyler Kirkham and Stephen Segovia. The title will be released Bi-monthly.

Jurgens stated that this book will be the first comic to make it to Issue #1000. Yes…1000. The cover for “Action Comics: Rebirth” shows Superman, Lex Luthor, Wonder Woman, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Hal Jordan, Batman and Parasite. I didn’t mind the New 52 renumber launch but this Rebirth revert renumbering is the way to go and DC should’ve done this back in 2011 instead of the New 52.

Geoff Johns stated: “Lex Luthor does become a Super-Man soon,” adding that the first issue will tie into Rebirth. “This is going to be the story of Superman, Lois and Jon that we have seen in Lois & Clark coming to Metropolis. But prior to that, Lex Luthor has declared himself the Super-Man of Metropolis. And that’s kind of what gets Superman there.”

The introductory story arch will be called “Path of Doom,” with a character
named Doomsday and a mysterious guest called Clark Kent?? “It’s not the way you think,” Jurgen’s said.

Batman – Shipping bi- monthly starting in June and will be written by Tom King, with art by David Finch and Mikel Janin.

Detective Comics – Shipping bi-monthly starting in June. As with Action Comics, it too will be returned to its

original numbering! Written by James Tynion IV, with art by Eddie Barrows andAlvaro Martinez.

Superman – A bi-monthly book starting in June with co-writers Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason. Art by Gleason and
Doug Mahnke. As far as we know this is not the New 52 Superman. Ok so as of right now there are actually two Supermen in continuity. The post-New 52 Superman. This is the main one, the one that’s been through tons of crap in the past year, and just re-obtained all of his powers and costume in the Vandal

Savage storyline. Now for Rebirth he is missing. More on this as we read through.

New Superman – Launching in July with Writer Gene Luen Yang joined by artist Viktor Bogdanovic bring us the character of Superman from the country of China by the name of Kenji Kongm who somehow obtains Superman’s powers that infuse his heart.

Supergirl – Debuting this September Kara Zor-El makes her way back into the DC universe. Written by Steve Orlando and art by Brian Ching. “With Supergirl it’s all about the things that make classic

Superman comics,” Steve Orlando said. “At the same time, we’re talking about what makes Supergirl different from Superman… Her experience as an outsider, I think, makes her unique.”

Superwoman – Launching in August DC brings you Superwoman! This is a new character (not Supergirl all grown up). Written and drawn by Phil Jimenez, assisted by artist Emanuela Lupacchino.

Trinity – Written and drawn by Francis Manapul, Finally the Trinity is a monthly! Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman will launch in September.

Super Sons – Damian Wayne & Jonathan White team up for a brand spanking new monthly title launching in September. Featuring Pre-52 Superman’s son Jon on the cover, as well as the classic Superman. Still no New 52 Superman! Son of a God meets son of the Bat. From the team of Chris Burns, Dennis Culver and Jorge Jimenez.

Wonder Woman – A bi-monthly featuring “Year One” storylines. Written by Greg Rucka and drawn by Liam Sharp and Nicola Scott.

Justice League of America – Will ship twice a month beginning in September. Justice League and Trinity, also feature the no-collar, spit-curled Superman. It’s the Pre-52 character rather than the New 52 incarnation. Hmmm where is New 52 Superman? I suspect a death that probably starts this whole rebirth event.

Other comics to make their debut this year:

Green Lanterns – Coming this June, a bi-monthly series written by Sam Humphries Robson Rocha and Ardian Syaf.

Cyborg – Beginning in August, a bi-monthly series written by John Semper with art by Will Conrad and Paul Pelletier.

Aquaman – Written by Dan Abnett and Brad Walker, with art by Walker, Jesus Merino, and Phil Briones.

was done by Gary Frank and is written by DC’s Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns with artwork by Frank, Ivan Reis, Phil Jimenez, and Ethan Van Sciver.
