According to a report from Variety, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids director Joe Johnston is in negotiations to helm Disney’s upcoming reboot of the film franchise, Shrunk, with Josh Gad to star.
In the original 1989 film, Rick Moranis portrayed Wayne Szalinski, a scientist father of a teenage girl and boy accidentally shrinks his and two other neighborhood teens to the size of insects. The teens must fight diminutive dangers as the father searches for them.
Earlier this year, Gad pitched the story idea of “Shrunk” to Disney to reboot the franchise, which originally had three other films (two sequels). Shrunk will mark the third sequel following the original film, with Honey, I Blew Up the Kid and Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves
Disney felt bringing Johnston back was a perfect fit for all involved, including Gad, to recapture what made the first film so wonderful. David Hoberman is producing, with Todd Rosenberg writing the script for the new film. Johnston was not involved with either of the previous sequels. More recent, Johnston is known for Captain America: The First Avenger, which was the first of the new Marvel Universe films.
Gad recently voiced Olaf in Frozen 2 and is known with kids for also his work in the live-action Beauty and the Beast film.
