E3 2017 Highlights For Day 4 – Nintendo

With Microsoft and Sony already out of the way, it was time for the final Console Company to show E3 audiences what they had. Considering the Switch’s limited library of games at the moment, this was a chance for Nintendo to really get people excited about the system; and they succeeded! In fact, in terms of convincing people to buy a new system – and considering I already have a PS4 – I’d argue that Nintendo won E3! So what did they show?

The answer: Everything you wanted – and more!

Zelda: Breath Of The Wild DLC

Until now, the only reason to get a Nintendo Switch was to play Zelda: Breath of the Wild, so it makes sense that Nintendo would want to take care of its first property and bring it some DLC. On June 30th, DLC Part 1 titled “The Master Trials” will be released featuring new customizable options, new map interface, and a Hard Mode that will upgrade enemies as well as where you find them. Though the biggest piece of new content will be found in the new Challenge titled “Trial of the Sword”.

In it, Link will start with no equipment and have to fight his way through about 45 floors of enemies. Upon completion, “the true power of the Master Sword awakens”. A second DLC will be released later this year around Holiday Season and it’s titled “The Champions’ Ballad”.

Kirby

I haven’t played a Kirby game since Kirby 64: The Crystal Shard; but that might be changing as there is now a fun Kirby game coming to the Switch in 2018. The game looks like loads of fun and seems to even bring in Multiplayer potential. I’m no expert on the Kirby series, but I always loved Kirby’s ability to absorb an enemies power and then mix it with another. I’m not sure if that will return in this game, but seeing him take on the Curling Stone form (a mix of Stone + Ice) makes me hopeful!

Pokemon

Last week, we got a Pokemon Direct Press Conference and learned about Pokken Tournament XD coming to the Switch as well as Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon coming to the 3DS. They were nice announcements but not what we “dreamed” about. Well Tsunekazu Ishihara of The Pokemon Company stopped by the E3 briefing to quickly announce that Gamefreak is working on a core Pokemon game for the Switch Console…..

Okay Joe. Breath slowly. A Pokemon Game like Gold or Silver ON A CONSOLE! Even better is that this console happens to be the Switch, which allows for stationary big screen play and portable play. It’s uncertain if this is still the fabled Pokemon Stars or if it’s a Re-Remake of Gen 1, but just the idea that we could be playing Pokemon on Console is a dream come true! There’s nothing more to report on this as the game is still in development and might not be released for more than a year.

Super Mario Odyssey

It’s not a Nintendo system without Mario; and whereas we thought his only appearance might be in the new Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle being developed by Ubisoft. Well think again because our favorite plumber is getting a full game for the Switch and it looks wonderfully weird but equally glorious!

Okay, in retrospect, we should have seen a new Mario title for Switch coming. As I said at the start of this, Switch really needs to build up their library and bringing each of the most successful franchises to the console is a great way to do that! This time around, it’s called Super Mario Odyssey, but it should be called The Power Of The Hat. The gameplay trailer has all the fun Mario platforming we love but this time around we can also control minions big and small with our hat. Super Mario Odyssey drops October 27th and I’ll most certainly have “1-Up Girl” stuck in my head till then.

Metroid Prime 4

Now as for games we never thought we’d see on Console again, Metroid Prime 4 is coming to Switch! We didn’t get a trailer or any gameplay, but we did get a pretty title card!

Rocket League

Rocket League is an incredibly fun game where you play as cars playing soccer… no seriously! Though the only downside of this game on other consoles is that it lends itself so well to mega in-room multiplayer but alas. That is not a strong point for the PS4 or the Xbox One. The Switch on the other hand is the perfect home for Rocket League. Imagine going to a beach party or BBQ with friends and all meeting up to play Rocket League! Nintendo has always been about playing together in person, and moving Rocket League to Switch Holiday 2017 is the perfect way to accomplish that! Plus you can drive with a Mario hat on!
