Ewan McGregor Responds to Obi-Wan Kenobi Film Rumors
Last summer, news broke that yet another standalone Star Wars film was in the very early stages of development centering around the Jedi-master Obi-Wan Kenobi. At the time, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) was said to be in very early talks to helm but no other details were known. Fans immediately began to question who would be playing Kenobi in film and many hoped that Ewan McGregor would reprise his role from Episodes 1 through 3.
Earlier this week, a picture posted by fitness instructor Tony Horton reignited rumors of McGregor’s involvement with the film. In the photo below from Horton’s Facebook page, Mcgregor can be seen working out while sporting an Obi-Wan type beard and hairstyle. The internet exploded with excitement at the possibility that he might be returning to the role.
While there is no confirmation yet of his involvement, McGregor did speak out about the Obi-Wan role during Sunday’s Golden Globes. As it turns out, if there is a standalone film in the works, McGregor is more than willing to reprise his role. He told reporters:
“There’s a lot of talk. I’d be happy to play him again. But I don’t know any more about it than you do. There’s no plan at the moment.”
While Star Wars fans’ hearts were breaking all over the world at the confirmation that there are no current plans for McGregor to return to the role, you can take solstice in the fact that he is still very much invested in the Star Wars world. McGregor told reporters that he has seen The Last Jedi and he loved it! He said:
“I loved the new one! I saw the new one just over Christmas, and I thought it was really, really beautiful. I loved it.”
