‘Fantastic Beasts’: Alison Sudol and Dan Fogler Discuss the Relationship Between Queenie and Jacob

Fantastic Beasts: Alison Sudol and Dan Fogler Discuss the Relationship Between Queenie and Jacob

At LeakyCon 2018 in Dallas, Texas, guests of honor Alison Sudol and Dan Fogler addressed a packed house to talk everything Fantastic Beasts, focusing in on the relationship between their two characters, Queenie and Jacob.

Sudol and Fogler described the audition process for the film, saying that the filmmakers were really searching for a certain dynamic between the four main characters. When he had completed his screen tests, Fogler said that he felt a real connection with Sudol and Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander). Sudol described her impression of Fogler following their audition:

“It’s a complicated character, Jacob, and there has to be this sensitivity and this vulnerability, but deep. It’s not something that he leads with, which is part of who he is. And then there has to be the…physical comedy and lightness and strength and sweetness. It’s actually a really fine line that you walk. It was amazing. It’s a very particular combination of qualities. And I noticed immediately that you were really confident and at ease in that. That was cool. And you made me laugh, like right off the bat.”

At the end of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Jacob is oblivated, losing all his memories of the magical world, and of Queenie. In one of the final scenes, however, Queenie enters Jacob’s bakery and there’s a spark of recognition when he looks at her. Though he couldn’t say much about how their relationship will play out in upcoming sequel, The Crimes of Grindelwald, Fogler did give a little bit of insight into what they will face moving forward:

“Yeah, it’s developing. The movie’s darker. They’re further along in their relationship, and as you can imagine, it gets more complex. There’s a question of, ‘How the hell did they get back together again?’ You see them at the end of the first movie and it’s just like, ‘Oh, yeah! I know you!’ So, obviously, they get to spent more time together….Totally vague. And there’s the whole dark cloud of they’re not supposed to be together. And they are. And their relationship is put under stress because of that.”

Sudol adds that the audience resonated with their love story because there is a sweetness and purity about it. “You see that they have true affection for each other,” she says. “Their hearts are similar. I think we all just want that. Who doesn’t want to believe that love like that exists?”
