Favorite Male Characters on ‘Supernatural’

Throughout fourteen seasons and three hundred episodes, Supernatural has racked up an impressive character list. Since the 300th episode aired I have attempted to decide my favorite male characters from the show. After watching the fourteenth season finale back in April I finally discovered one thing.  Outside of Dean, Sam, and Castiel I have love for many of the male characters featured on the show.  The various hunters, demons, angels, and monsters over the years have made me love the show more! Their performances have all given me reasons to tell people to start watching the show if they were not already. They too deserve credit alongside the other reasons fans always want more Supernatural. These are the male characters, not including Team Free Will, over the years that have truly spoken to me on the show.

Crowley

Hello boys. Those words and his constant Rocky and Bullwinkle references over the years have made Crowley a fan favorite. That is not the only reason we love Crowley though. The moment Sam tortures him in “Sacrifice” truly seals the deal. The acting in that scene is beyond beautiful.  Mark Sheppard does an amazing job portraying that even the King of Hell just wants love. We all want that in our lives. His character grew more upon bringing Rowena on the show too.  Crowley is one of the best male characters to grace the series. If anyone had to take over Lucifer’s spot I’m glad it was Crowley.  After all, he is at least was on our boy’s side for a majority of the series afterward. In fact, Crowley had their backs more than his own making us miss his presence on the show.

Bobby

Idgits is a key phrase I mutter at least five times on my way to and from work now. Bobby willingly became the father the boys needed. This made viewers adopt him as their father too over the years. That is what makes Bobby’s death in “Death’s Door” even harder to deal with and accept. I still feel they could have trained his spirit not to become malevolent. He could have lived with the boys over the years. Ghost Bobby could have been awesome. After all, exceptions always exist in Supernatural. No one wanted to see Bobby die a second time. Thankfully, the alternate universe timeline made me far happier than I could have imagined too. Any timeline where Dean, Sam, and audiences gain a version of Bobby is a good timeline to me.

Balthazar

There is not enough love out there for Balthazar! He is one of the best characters ever despite his limited screen time. Besides, this angel made sure the Titanic didn’t sink! Why? So the world did not have to hear that Celine Dion song one more time. That makes him amazing in my book. Despite Balthazar’s reluctance to help the Winchester brothers over the years they drew him into the mix anyway. His one-liners are also some of my favorites. I remain stunned they are not on numerous shirts somewhere. The saddest moment with the character is his downfall.  Maybe this is because his downfall came at the hands of the show’s favorite angel. Then again, I sorely miss his quips. I also often wonder why out of all the characters he has not been brought back. Include him in season fifteen somehow please!

Gabriel

Oh, you trickster.  In many ways, Gabriel is the ultimate trickster. Gabriel has ultimately provided us with much needed comedic relief over the years. Even though we learned later on that his look is because of Loki. The ending of “Mystery Spot” completely wrecks us upon Sam’s confession to Gabriel. The guy who was trying to show Sam a life without Dean.  However, despite the amount of times we watch Dean die,  the episode remains far more comedic than not.  “Changing Channels” is another episode where we see inside jokes. Through numerous shows, Gabriel takes Dean and Sam through lessons he feels they should learn. Gabriel has also given his all for the cause not once but twice. His character was originally rather selfish. Now though we all must admit he has wormed his way into our hearts making him one of my favorite male characters.

Lucifer

How can an actor pull off a vessel we pity but also an entity that most consider pure evil? Mark Pelligrino continues to amaze viewers with his portrayal of Lucifer. By integrating him back into the show we have also learned more about his vessel Nick.  Pelligrino’s comedic timing is beyond pleasing. In many instances, I told myself not to laugh because it felt wrong laughing at something Satan said. Naturally, I laughed anyway.  However, watching Jared Padalecki take on Pelligrino’s mannerisms made us adore the character more.  Although Rick Springfield also portrayed Lucific, Pelligrino remains the only version of the character in many fan’s minds. Lucifer remains a fan favorite because Pelligrino portrays him flawlessly.

Garth

Mr. Fizzles thinks you’re a liar. How does one not like Garth? The intent was that Garth could replace Rufus and Bobby at one point. Garth is his own character though instead of merely a replacement. This is what makes his transformation into a werewolf so heartbreaking. I’m glad we did not lose this character because of the rules of hunting. However, Garth remains useful on hunts despite being a supernatural being. I keep hoping for a werewolf cure that will transform him and his family human once again. Regardless he will remain one of my favorite male characters on the show.

John Winchester

There would be no show without John Winchester. The brothers would not have had anything in common to get Sam back into hunting. John, of course, is a character that has received a lot of flack over the years. However, he’s one of the more complex television characters to grace the small screen. The man who wanted to protect his children also just wanted his wife back. He wanted the life he knew back. Ultimately his grief caused him to go about such in ways that were not exactly the more orthodox. He also was not as kind as he could have been. The 300th episode reveals a fact about John that I’ve known for some time. Deep down he loved his sons.  John truly cared even if he did not know how to show it.

Chuck

The moment that Chuck popped up in the 200th episode, “Fan Fiction“, I immediately knew he was God. The theories that spread like wildfire throughout the fandom for years were confirmed.  This was canon no matter what anyone said. Then we officially learned that Chuck is God.  This made him writing all the Supernatural books once upon a time even better. If God were more involved he could fix everything alongside his sister Amora. However, considering the end of season fourteen, I think next season will feature Chuck far more than not. Besides, I cannot imagine Supernatural going out without at least one more appearance from Chuck. He might not be my favorite male character right now, but he’s still one of the best.

Kevin

Kevin will always be the fan’s prophet! This is not a slight against the other prophets, but there is just something about Kevin Tran. I think he had the most realistic reaction to everything he learns upon becoming a prophet. Who merely accept that demons, vampires, werewolves, and many other supernatural are real? His freak out will forever remain one of my favorite moments in Supernatural history. I think that is why when Gadreel kills Kevin fans took the death a little harder than normal.  Namely, because Gadreel was using Sam as a vessel. I’m still sad that the alternate universe version of Kevin did not survive somehow.  Losing characters all over again is not my idea of fun!

Cain

Cain is one of the most underrated characters on show. I was immediately in love with the retelling of the Cain and Abel story. This is one of the richest arcs throughout the years of the show. This arc truly turned things around into being more about heaven and hell once more. I easily fell in love with Osmundson’s portrayal of the character. An older far more jaded Dean really. Thankfully the show pursued the mark of Cain was a storyline a bit longer. This gave us more screen time with the talented Osmundson.  This arc also provided another reason for the boys to find a way to save each other once more.  Typical Supernatural goodness.

My honorable mentions must go to Benny, Rufus, and Jack.  Most of the characters on the show throughout the years deserve some appreciation and recognition. Ezekiel, Zachariah, Michael, and Adam all deserve their time in the spotlight too. The show has produced so many lovable characters over the past fourteen seasons its hard to choose just one favorite.  That’s the beauty of this show and what I will miss the most.
