First Look at Sonic’s Design For The ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Movie

Images were leaked today showing Sonic’s design for the upcoming live action Sonic the Hedgehog movie via Hamagama/Carroll, the film’s marketing firm and, well, the Internet isn’t quite sure what to think.

This is our first real glimpse of the newly design Sonic, as previously we had only been shown a silhouetted teaser poster back in January. That poster, now infamous due to the headlines made after fans reacted to Sonic’s unusually muscular legs, wasn’t exactly the welcome reception the studio had probably hoped for. But sure, anybody who runs as much as Sonic must be muscular, right?

Fans tried to let it go, we thought that maybe the finished product would look better, but these new images haven’t exactly alleviated our fears and are certainly not what we expected – but to be fair, most of us had never imagined a live-action/CGI hybrid Sonic anyway so there’s not really much for us to compare the new look against.

That being said, I suppose the design is OK. There are hints that the design was cobbled together from various iterations of Sonic throughout the years, with his eyes being a dark green and fur covering his whole body, on top of him being rather tall – lending more toward the later Sonic releases than his Sega Genesis style. That being said, you can decide what you think of the design yourself:

Now, we might be judging too quickly, as these are just drawings of what will be a fully animated 3D character set in the real world. Once translated to the screen he may look completely different, or in movement the character may look better than expected. We will have to withhold judgement until the film is released on November 8th, 2019.

Sonic the Hedgehog is being directed by Jeff Folwer and features Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) as the voice of Sonic and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. The film is being released by Paramount Pictures.
