Freddie Highmore Teases More Shaun and Lea Moments in ‘The Good Doctor’ Season 2

The cast of ABC’s hit drama The Good Doctor will be making their way back to set in just a few weeks time to begin filming the highly-anticipated second season of the series. Meanwhile, the writer’s room has already been hard at work.

In the upcoming second season, series star Freddie Highmore will not only be reprising his role as Dr. Shaun Murphy on the series, but he’s already been working very closely with series creator David Shore and will be stepping behind the camera as well to write and direct. Recently, Highmore was interviewed on Entertainment Weekly‘s Chasing Emmy podcast where he spoke a little bit about that experience.

He told EW that Shore has taken him under his wing and that he will be writing one episode this coming season and also directing another episode as well. Before filming starts, Highmore said he’s focused on being as helpful as he can be while working with the writers.

In addition to discussing Highmore’s new writing and directing role, EW also took this opportunity to ask about some details relating to the upcoming second season. Earlier this year, it was announced that four fan favorites guest stars would be promoted to series regulars in the second season. Newcomers Will Yun Lee, who plays the former cop turned doctor Alex Park, and Fiona Gubelmann, who plays the cut-throat resident, Dr. Morgan Reznick, were both bumped to regulars for season 2. Additionally, season one vet Christina Chang who plays Dr. Neil Melendez’s (Nicholas Gonzalez) counterpart Dr. Audrey Lim has also received a promotion to series regular as did the lovable Paige Spara, who plays Lea, Dr. Shaun Murphy’s (Freddie Highmore) love interest.

Lea’s return is perhaps what has fans most excited about this coming season. When EW asked about her relationship with Shaun and if we can expect to see more of those two together, Highmore delivered a definite yes answer while also remaining cautious about letting slip any details he’s learned about while working in the writer’s room. Highmore delightfully responded by answering:

[row]“Absolutely, yes we can. It’s funny because actors can usually just rely on the excuse that they have no idea what’s coming, so they don’t have to give any teases about what’s happening in season 2, but I’m actually in the middle of being in the writers’ room, so I know lots of what’s going to happen with Lea and Shaun, and all of it is exciting, but I can’t reveal any of it.”[/row]

Exciting times are ahead for our favorite Good Doctor couple! Perhaps fans can look forward to more karaoke nights or another road trip in the future for Shaun and Lea.

All will be revealed when The Good Doctor returns to ABC Monday nights at 10 PM EST this fall. Are you excited?
