'Game of Thrones' Star Emilia Clarke on Daenerys' 'Heartbreaking' Loss

Just when you think Game of Thrones can’t get any better, an episode like last night’s comes along and the series totally outdoes itself!  Sunday night’s episode Beyond the Wall was arguably the most exciting and action-packed episode of the entire series, however, it also came at a heartbreaking price.

In a shocking twist of events during Sunday’s episode, Daenerys sadly lost one of her dragons during a battle with the Army of the Dead.  Jon Snow and his A-Team had trekked out far beyond the wall in an effort to capture one of the Wights and bring it back as proof that the Army of the Dead exists.  While on their mission, the men realized they had taken on more than they bargained for and they sent Gendry back to get help.  The men were surrounded with no way out when Dany and her three flying, fire-breathing children showed up to save the day.  Sadly, the dragons were no match for the Night King who carefully aimed and tossed a spear which reached one of the dragons, Viserion.  The dragon fell out of the sky and into the icy river below.

What happened next, however, was the real twist.  Once the battle had finished, the Army of the Dead pulled the body of Viserion from the river and resurrected it from the dead.  The catch?  The dragon is now a member of the Army of the Dead!

This whole scene was dramatic and overwhelming.  You could see the pain in Daenerys’ eyes as she watched one of her beloved children fall and die.  Dany herself, Emila Clarke, spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the heart-wrenching moment from episode 6:

“It’s a heartbreak.  Not only losing it but having that being given to the other side.”

As if losing one of her precious dragons wasn’t enough, she will most likely have to go up against him in battle at some point in the near future.  Daenerys does not yet know that her dragon has been resurrected but, you can expect another gutting and emotional scene when she does find this out.

However, Clarke thinks this might be a driving force for Dany.  She said:

“My dragon could not have died for nothing, so this is now so important.  For the first time, you’re starting to see her defenses broken.”

Though Dany seems vulnerable at the moment, it’s important to remember that she is a force to be reckoned with and most likely will come back from this tragedy stronger and even more focused than ever.  So where does Clarke think this leaves her character?  She says:

“The biggest question this season for Dany is what side of the coin she’s on.  The unequivocal nature in choosing to be this aggressive is something you haven’t seen before. She’s practiced patience and has this savior-like quality, but now it’s game on.”

Hopefully, we’ll get to see some of this new aggressiveness in the season finale which will air next Sunday at 9 pm on HBO.  We can’t believe the finale is already here!  Are you ready?
