Guardians of the Galaxy star Karen Gillan made her directorial debut earlier this year when her film The Party’s Just Beginning debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival. Now, the film distribution company The Orchard has bought the rights to her break-out film.
When The Party’s Just Beginning was shown at the Tribeca Film Festival, it was hailed as one of the top standouts from the event. Gillan writes and directs the films as well as stars as Liusaidh, a hard-partying twenty-something. An official synopsis of the film, according to the Wrap, reads as follows, “Living with her parents in the remote Scottish Highlands, she spends most nights boozing at the local pub and embarks on what she assumes–perhaps rightly — will be yet another short-term fling when she hooks up with an out-of-towner (Lee Pace) who is going through a midlife crisis. At the same time, a wrong number leads Liusaidh to an anonymous connection with an old man grappling with his own end-of-life questions and regrets.”
Gillan is beyond ecstatic to be working with The Orchard and to be showing her film to a wider ranged audience. Gillan said she is, “totally and completely thrilled to team up with The Orchard on my directorial debut. I greatly admire the films that The Orchard put out into the world and I’m honored to have The Party’s Just Beginning be one of them.”
The Orchard’s EVP of Film and TV Paul Davidson echoed Gillan’s sentiments and commented on what it was about her film that stood out to them above the rest. He said, “Karen Gillan’s The Party’s Just Beginning establishes her as a unique talent and fresh new voice that absolutely blew us away. It’s a directorial debut anchored by a stellar performance and a compelling screenplay that makes her a true triple threat. We are excited to partner with her on her first feature.”
Gillan most recently starred in Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War as well as Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. She is set to reprise her roles from both films in the upcoming untitled Avengers 4 film and Jumanji 2.
The Orchard and Gillan are planning to release The Party’s Just Beginning at some point this fall.
