Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark’ Film Moves Forward

If you grew up in the 80s and 90s, Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro’s next project is certainly one that haunted your childhood nightmares. del Toro is adapting a script based on author Alvin Schwartz’s iconic book series Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

del Toro has been working on the film for quite some time, however, it was announced on Friday that the film had finally gained ground to move forward.  Entertainment One (eOne) and CBS Films will be co-financing the production with André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Trollhunter) to direct.

According to Deadline, eOne’s President of Film, Television and Digital announced:

[row]“(The film), led by the incomparable Guillermo del Toro, is such a chillingly fun ride that it’s sure to leave audiences around the world jumping in their seats. We’re thrilled to be joining Terry Press and her team at CBS Films, Guillermo, André Øvredal, and the talented group they’ve assembled, and look forward to launching in Cannes through our partners at Sierra/Affinity.”[/row]

The original Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark book was released in 1981 with follow up volumes including More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (1984) and Scary Stories 3: More Tales to Chill Your Bones (1991). Each volume contained a series of terrifying short stories drawing from urban legends and local folklore accompanied by macabre illustrations by Stephen Gammell. The book series became an international best-seller.

The film will be distributed by Lionsgate and will follow a group of young teens who must solve the mystery surrounding sudden and macabre deaths in their small town.

No additional details are known at this time but we are psyched to see what del Toro comes up with for this film!
