HBO’s ‘Watchmen’ Pilot Adds ‘Aquaman’ Villain Yahya Abdul-Mateen II

The cast for the upcoming HBO pilot Watchmen continues to grow and impress! Just this week alone, the series added Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons, and Sleepy Hallow alum Tom Mison.

On Friday, it was announced that Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has also joined the cast of Damon Lindelof’s pilot, Deadline reports.

HBO’s Watchmen will be an original story based on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ limited 12-issue comic series. The pilot will be set in an alternate version of history where superheroes are treated as outlaws and will look to break new ground while also paying tribute to the original source materials, Moore and Gibbons’ graphic novels. Lindelof’s plan is to bring the storyline into a more modern setting which would provide different challenges for the characters including dealing with social and political topics from today’s society.

Lindelof wrote the script for the pilot and will also be executive producing along with Nicole Kassell who is also directing. Tom Spezialy and Joseph Iberti are also on board as executive producers.

Unfortunately, we don’t know any details yet regarding which characters the actors will be playing. In addition to Irons, Mison and Abdul-Mateen II, the stellar Watchmen cast includes Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Adelaide Clemens, Andrew Howard, Sara Vickers, Frances Fisher, and Jacob Ming-Trent.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has been seen previously in Netflix’s The Get Down and guest starred on The Handmaid’s Tale. He will be seen next in the highly-anticipated DC film Aquaman in the role of Black Manta. Aquaman also stars Jason Momoa, Amber Herd, Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, and Dolph Lundgren. Aquaman hits theaters in December.

As of right now, Watchmen has only received a pilot order from HBO. There’s no word yet on whether or not the show will be picked up to series.
